Death can play a cruel trick on our memories. When the loss is fresh, we do what we can to keep the flood of memories at bay, hoping to process a bit at a time and protect ourselves. As time passes and the pain isn’t as sharp, we find some of our memories to be a little foggier than we would like.

Boston Investigates Tragic Hit-And-Run

A horrific scene unfolded on Boston streets. Francis McGrath of Stonham was struck late morning near the intersection of 13th and Chelsea. He was dragged a quarter-mile to the North Washington streets. Then, the driver left him to die.

Thankfully Boston Police have tracked the driver of the vehicle, though they have not released the person’s name as they continue to investigate.

In the last reporting year, Massachusetts saw 56 pedestrian fatalities. According to Massachusetts Vision Zero Coalition, pedestrian deaths are preventable. Insufficient planning and policy have allowed streets to become too dangerous for pedestrians, and it needs to change. Boston is currently working with the City’s Vision Zero Task Force to go over crash sites. Their hope is that cities will redesign their streets with human error in mind so that when a person makes a mistake on the road, it is not fatal.

Why Do So Many Pedestrians Get Hit by Motor Vehicles?

The CDC has tracked pedestrian fatalities and has found driver negligence to be the top reason for accidents.

  • Distracted driving is a major cause. Hard to see pedestrians require a motorist to be focused entirely on the road, not talking on a cell phone, eating, drinking, or texting.
  • Sometimes drivers will roll through a stop sign or fail to yield to a pedestrian who has the right of way.
  • Left-hand turns can cause fatal accidents when the motorist is focused on the intersection and not on the pedestrians crossing the crosswalk.
  • Speeding, especially when weather conditions require a driver to slow down, can be considered reckless driving.
  • Driving under the influence impacts driver focus, reaction times, and overall reasoning.
  • Some drivers fail to see small children or pedestrians when backing out of a driveway or busy parking lot.

When people are behind the wheel, they can forget that they are surrounded by tons of steel, fiberglass, and rubber. They can neglect to use the proper amount of caution and attention needed to safely navigate the streets for themselves, other motorists, and pedestrians.
